1/3 liver disease patients get kidney disease
Acute kidney injury occurs in over one third of patients with cirrhosis who are admitted to hospitals, and is associated with a 6-fold increased risk of in-hospital mortality (dying), according to results of a research study presented at The Liver Meeting 2018, the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).
The increased risk of mortality applies as much to patients in the intensive-care unit (ICU) as it does to patients in the wards, and remains high even after 1 year of follow up, stated lead author Dr. Raseen Tariq, MD, Rochester General Hospital, Rochester, New York.
So make sure you get your kidney function (blood and urine tests) checked if you suffer from liver problems.
